Congressman French Hill comments on the debt limit and cutting spending:
“Since Republicans took control of the House, we remained committed to a responsible solution to our nation’s debt crisis that limits reckless government spending, saves taxpayer dollars, and grows our economy.
“On April 26, with my support, House Republicans passed the Limit, Save, Grow Act. This bill would have led to more than $4.5 trillion in savings over the next 10 years.
“Although this bill was never going to become law because the White House and Senate are under Democratic control, this legislation was critical because it was the only proposal to pass the House or Senate to raise the debt ceiling and brought President Biden to the table to meet with Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“This week, House Republicans passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which cuts over $2 trillion in federal spending – the largest cut in United States history. This legislation addresses many conservative principles: it claws back billions in unspent COVID-19 funds, caps spending growth, does not raise taxes, rescinds increases to the IRS, and more.
“Although I would have liked to see larger cuts, the Fiscal Responsibility Act is a good bill that conservatives should support. This legislation not only prevents our nation from defaulting on its debt but is also a strong start in returning conservative principles to Washington, bringing federal spending back to normal levels, and growing our economy. I am committed to reforming our broken budget process and getting our nation economically back on track.”
